JT11, 12/30/2010

Date:  12/30/2010

Participants:  Jeri and Tom Mahood

General search area:  Park Blvd. to Samuelsons Rock, then circumnavigating around the hills to the northwest.

Rationale for searching this area:

There is a zone of Serin Drive tower cell coverage on the northerly slopes of a freestanding set of hills to the northwest of Samuelsons Rock.  This zone happens to be right at the 10.6 mile distance from the tower.  It had never been searched, other than perhaps from the air.

Impressions of area and findings:

Jeri stayed primarily at the toe of the slope and I moved through the cell zone part way up the slope.  I found my area to be very rugged and moving across the slope very difficult.  I could see no valid reason for anyone to be where I was.  It seemed even more unlikely higher up (and much more difficult), so I didn’t go any further up the hill.  The map suggests  a large area of cell coverage that could be explored, but being on-site and seeing the terrain suggests otherwise.

Coverage level:

The area was pretty reasonably covered.  In hindsight, there was an area to the northeast of the cell zone (just northerly of our track) that someone could have used to attempt to reach Park Blvd.  We will check that area on a future trip.

Comments:

The was a crazy, windy and cold day.  I did most of the hike wearing full goggles.  Jeri is one study girl.
