JT16, 2/6/2011

Date:  2/6/2011

Participants:  Pete Carlson, Matt and Kim Jordan, Tom Mahood, Patrick McCurdy

General search area:  Juniper Flats trailhead to southeasterly slopes of Quail Mountain

Rationale for searching this area:  Examining the images of the initial search map showed there were some canyons on the southeasterly face of Quail Mountain that hadn’t been yet covered.  This search was planned to fill in those gaps.  Also, a cross country route back from Quail Mountain was chosen to fill in areas between there and the Juniper Flat trailhead.

Impressions of area and findings:  Patrick and I checked out the westerly canyons and the others ascended  east.  The westerly canyons had many obscured places which we checked, and were viable routes to the top.  The easterly routes went more directly up the face and seemed less probable as a potential route for Bill.

Coverage level:

I feel coverage in these canyons, between the initial search and ours, is complete.

Comments:

Although we did not know it at the time, as Patrick and I first entered the canyon at the base of the southeast face of Quail Mountain, we passed about a hundred yards easterly of the spot the red bandanna was found during the initial search.  Had we known that at the time, our searching may have been more thorough, however I don’t think it’s worth a return trip.
